FELIPE's Beloved Hearts Memorial

Memories of FELIPE

Last May 2, 2008, I went home to the Philippines to celebrate my father's 78th birthday. The journey was both a happy and a sad one, in fact, one of the most difficult journeys that I had to take. You see, Tatay, which means Dad in our language, was diagnosed with a terminal cancer and that trip of mine had two missions: to tell Tatay his days are numbered and to tell him goodbye. I do not know where to start and how to begin inspite of the special bond that my Tatay and I have. How do you say goodbye to a love one? And much more, how do you tell him that his life is coming to an end? I cannot find the words to comfort him when I myself need comforting... I knew he was in pain but how can I tell him I am in pain too? He was hurting but I am too! Inspite of his condition, all that is in his mind is us his children, and how he can make our lives better!

I went back to the US in five days with a heavy heart knowing that I might not see my Tatay alive again nor hold his hand, nor hear his songs, his wisdom and his laughter! Yet I took back with me an inheritance and a gift from my father and that is the wealth of home! I also have a lasting memory of him, a video of him singing his favorite song, one that he used to sing to us his children when we were young, as he carried us in his shoulders.

You see, Tatay, you have left this world a better place, and touched too many people's lives to ever be forgotten. Neither time, nor distance nor death itself can touch a love that endures forever ...Instead, you are just embarking on another beautiful journey.

I will always remember your last words as a father
"My children, please take care of each other."

Tatay, you are my beloved heart... I will miss you...

Perhaps you sent a lovely card
Or sat quietly in a chair,
Perhaps you sent beautiful flowers,
If so, we saw them there,
Perhaps you sent a bit of food
Or let us use your car,
Perhaps it was a call you made
From nearby or afar.
Perhaps it is a note we read in the e-mail
Or the donation we receive well
Perhaps you spoke the kindest words
As any friend or relative could say,
Perhaps you were not there at all
Just thought of us that day.
Whatever you did to console our hearts
We thank you so much whatever the part.

Our family finds healing in knowing that you remembered and cared.
Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.
